The water-eczema connection

Why Canberra showers and baths can keep flaring your kid's eczema.

  • 1 in 3
    Australian children develop eczema (AIHW)
  • 2.0 ppm
Chlorine in Canberra tap water, on average
  • 10×
    More chlorine than Sydney's water

Eczema is the most common chronic skin condition in Australian children, and Australia has one of the highest rates in the world. Researchers from King's College London (Perkin et al., 2016) found that early-life exposure to chlorinated, mineral-heavy bathing water was associated with damage to the skin barrier and a higher risk of atopic dermatitis. For a child whose skin barrier is already fragile, every Canberra shower and bath is another dose of the same chemical irritant. We don't make medical claims about curing eczema. What we do is filter the chlorine out at the water main, before it reaches your child's bath, so that one trigger is gone from the equation. Many of our Canberra customers report their kids' flare-ups settle within weeks of the install.

Five ways Canberra water is costing you

You've probably blamed the wrong thing.

Tight skin, itchy bath nights, brittle hair, a chemical smell in the bathroom. Most of it is the same culprit.

1

The post-shower panic

You step out of the shower and your skin feels tight, stinging, almost shrunken. You're reaching for moisturiser before you've even finished drying off. It's not the dry Canberra air. Chlorine at 2.0 ppm is a strong enough oxidiser to strip the sebum your skin barrier depends on, which means water loss starts the moment you turn off the tap.

"I used to leave the shower with burning and itching on my legs. The dry skin on my elbows and knees has gone."

2

When your child says "the water is itchy"

Children's skin is thinner and more permeable than ours, and if there's already eczema in the picture the barrier is fragile to start with. Chlorinated water makes flare-ups worse, which is how parents end up coating their kids in steroid creams just to stop the scratching at night.

"He's told me the water isn't itchy anymore and we can see his face is not dry."

3

Your $80 shampoo can't fix this

Chlorine oxidises the disulfide bonds in keratin. In plain terms, it weakens the hair shaft, lifts the cuticle (which is why you get frizz and stripped colour), and washes away the scalp's natural protective oils. The salon shampoo isn't the problem. The water it's mixing with is.

"My hair feels not only cleaner but stronger and thicker. My wife's scalp doesn't itch anymore."

4

Why the bathroom smells like a public pool

Hot pressurised water through a shower head turns dissolved chlorine into gas you breathe in. A ten-minute hot shower can put more chlorine through your lungs than drinking two litres of the same water from the tap. That's the tickle in the throat, the dry cough, the stinging eyes.

"I usually had a cough in the shower. Not anymore. It doesn't smell or taste like chemicals."

5

"But Canberra water is soft" (and that's the problem)

Canberra's water is low in calcium and magnesium, which is what "soft" means. Soft water makes soaps lather aggressively, which makes you rinse longer, which means more chlorine contact with your skin and scalp. Soft and "world-class" are not the same thing.

"Canberra's water is soft, but my skin still felt stripped after every shower."

Two ways to fix it

Whole-home, or one shower. We'll tell you which.

Most popular · for families

Whole-home filtration system

  • One install at your water main. Every tap, every shower, every bath.
  • Engineered for Canberra's 2.0 ppm load, not generic municipal water.
  • Filter replacement is straightforward and handled by us on a schedule that suits you.
  • Plumber-installed in a single visit for most homes.

The right answer for households with multiple bathrooms, kids in baths, or chronic skin issues. You stop thinking about chlorine entirely because it's gone from the moment water enters the house.

If you rent or want to start small

Point-of-use shower filtration

  • Installs at a single shower head.
  • Solves the skin, scalp, hair, and breathing issues for that one shower.
  • A practical option for renters, smaller homes, or anyone wanting to feel the difference before committing.
  • Plumber-fitted, no DIY guesswork.

Doesn't fix the kids' bath. Doesn't fix the kitchen tap. But for one person in one shower, it does the job.

Who installs it

Licensed plumber. Not a salesperson.

Brett is a licensed Canberra plumber. The in-home assessment is a real one, not a sales pitch with a clipboard. He looks at the water main, the bathrooms, the family setup, and tells you what's actually needed. If the answer is one shower head filter and a phone call in a year, that's the answer. If it's whole-home, you'll get the reasons in writing.

Still unsure?

The questions Canberra homeowners ask us most.

Isn't Canberra water already soft and "world-class"?
It's soft, which means low in minerals. That's a different thing to safe-for-skin. Canberra water is heavily chlorinated to stay clean across long distances, and 2.0 ppm of chlorine is a strong oxidiser on bare skin even when the mineral content is low. The "soft" label gets thrown around a lot, but it doesn't tell you anything about what the chlorine is doing to your shower experience. Want a clear read on your specific home? Book the free in-home assessment.
Can't I just buy a shower head filter from Bunnings?
You can, and for some households that's the right call. The catch is that not all shower filters are engineered for Canberra's chlorine load (most are designed for hard water, not high-chlorine soft water), and a DIY fit can leak or under-perform if it's not matched to your shower fitting. The free assessment is where we figure out whether a point-of-use filter is right for your home or whether you need something at the main.
How much does it cost?
Every home is different. A unit at the water main is a different conversation to a single shower head, and we'd rather quote you honestly than pull a number out of the air. The assessment is free, the written quote lands within 48 hours, and you decide from there. Easiest way to get a clear answer for your home is to book the assessment.
Can I install it myself?
We don't recommend it. Filter housings need to be sized for your flow rate and pressure, and a botched fit means leaks, voided manufacturer warranty, and water damage. Plumber-installed means it goes in once, properly, and the warranty stands. Happy to walk you through the difference at the assessment.
How often do filters need replacing?
Depends on the system, your water usage, and the cartridge spec. We schedule replacements when they're actually due, not on a generic calendar, and we walk you through the ongoing cost in the written quote so there are no surprises. Book the assessment and we'll lay it all out.
Does this actually help with eczema?
A lot of Canberra households who installed filtration tell us their eczema flare-ups eased after their bathing water changed. We don't make medical claims and we'd never tell you it's a cure. What we will say is that the chlorine load coming out of an untreated Canberra shower head is a known irritant for sensitive skin, and removing it removes one variable. The honest read for your situation is a chat at the assessment.
